Mystery Disease in Southwestern Congo Claims Over 140 Lives as Officials Scramble for Answers
Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo – An unidentified illness with flu-like symptoms has claimed the lives of at least 143 people in the Panzi health zone of Kwango Province, southwest Congo, between November 10 and 25, local health officials reported.
The disease presents symptoms such as fever, severe headache, cough, and anemia, according to provincial health minister Apollinaire Yumba. These symptoms have disproportionately affected women and children, and local authorities warn that the situation is worsening.
Rising Death Toll Sparks Urgent Response
The deputy provincial governor, Rémy Saki, stated that the number of deaths ranges from 67 to 143, reflecting the lack of clarity in the ongoing investigation. “A team of epidemiological experts is expected in the region to take samples and identify the problem,” he said, emphasizing the need for swift action.
Local residents have raised concerns over the limited access to medical treatment in the rural Panzi health zone, which lacks adequate supplies and infrastructure. Cephorien Manzanza, a civil society leader, noted that many victims died at home without medical care.
Call for International Support
Minister Yumba has urged the population to exercise caution, particularly in handling deceased individuals, to prevent potential disease transmission. He also appealed to national and international partners for urgent medical supplies to manage the crisis.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have been alerted to the outbreak. WHO confirmed it has deployed experts to assist the Democratic Republic of Congo’s health ministry in collecting samples and conducting laboratory analyses.
Ongoing Health Challenges in Congo
The mysterious outbreak compounds existing health challenges in the DRC, which is also grappling with a severe mpox epidemic. According to WHO, the country has reported more than 47,000 suspected cases of mpox and over 1,000 related deaths.
Despite these challenges, health officials remain determined to uncover the source of this new disease and prevent further fatalities. Investigations are ongoing, and updates are expected as experts gather and analyze samples.
The outbreak underscores the pressing need for improved healthcare infrastructure and rapid response mechanisms in rural and underserved regions of Congo.
