The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proactively set up a 14-bed isolation ward at SevenHills Hospital in Mumbai’s Marol area due to concerns over monkeypox, also known as Mpox. Monkeypox has been reported in several countries, including Pakistan and Sweden. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared it a global health emergency, citing the rapid spread of a more virulent strain, Clade 1b, which has a higher transmission rate and mortality rate of about 3.6%, particularly among children. In response, the Indian government has instructed district hospitals and medical colleges nationwide to establish isolation wards and adhere to testing protocols to remain vigilant.
Public Health Advisory
Authorities have issued advisories to educate the public about Mpox, emphasizing the need for preventive measures. These include maintaining good hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and self-isolating if symptoms develop after traveling from affected regions. Dr. V Ramasubramanian, an infectious diseases specialist, stressed the importance of early detection and isolation to prevent the spread of the virus.
Despite the global alert, Indian health officials, including those from Chandigarh and Ranchi, assure that there is no immediate cause for concern but urge caution and preparedness. The Chandigarh health department has set up an isolation ward at GMSH Sector 16 and has emphasized awareness without panic.
